John Lee is a boundary-pushing guitarist, composer, and educator based in Washington, D.C., whose music defies conventional genres and brings together a kaleidoscope of global influences. Known for his innovative playing and exploratory compositions, Lee has become a fixture in the DMV (D.C., Maryland, Virginia) music scene and a respected figure in modern jazz and experimental music circles.

Born in Montgomery County, Maryland, Lee grew up surrounded by a variety of musical styles, from classic rock and blues to jazz and world music. He picked up the guitar at a young age and quickly developed a distinctive voice on the instrument, combining technical prowess with a deep sense of feel and melody. His early musical influences included rock bands like Yes and The Grateful Dead, jazz icons such as John Coltrane and Hermeto Pascoal, and the sounds of Malian and Brazilian folk traditions.

Lee went on to earn his degree in Jazz and Contemporary Music from The New School in New York City, where he studied under influential mentors like Paul Bollenback, Dave Fiuczynski, Kurt Rosenwinkel, and George Garzone. These experiences deepened his understanding of improvisation and composition while encouraging him to explore music beyond traditional boundaries.

Returning to the Washington, D.C. area, Lee quickly became a sought-after collaborator, performing with a wide array of local and national artists including bassist Kris Funn, drummer Dennis Chambers, trumpeter Dave Ballou, and pianist Brian Marsella. He is a longtime collaborator with musicians from diverse cultural backgrounds and has toured internationally with Malian singer Fatoumata Diawara, Brazilian percussionist Cyro Baptista, and The Godfather of Gnawa Hassan Hakmoun among others. These collaborations have shaped his sound into something that is as rhythmically rich as it is harmonically complex.

Lee’s discography as a bandleader includes four critically acclaimed albums: Caveman: Before the World (2002), Totem(2005), John Lee: Somewhere Impossible to Find (2011), The Nature Series (2013), and Chu Bubaloo (2018). Each record reveals a new layer of Lee’s sonic identity, blending progressive rock textures, jazz improvisation, Afrobeat rhythms, and ambient atmospheres. His compositions are both cerebral and emotionally resonant, inviting listeners into intricate soundscapes that reward deep listening.

In addition to his work as a performer and composer, Lee is a dedicated educator. He serves as a jazz and commercial guitar lecturer at Towson University in Maryland, inspiring students to develop their own artistic voices and explore music fearlessly. He is also deeply involved in MusiCorps, a renowned rehabilitation program that uses music as therapy for wounded veterans at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. His work in this space underscores his belief in music as a tool for healing and connection.

Whether performing at intimate jazz clubs, teaching in university classrooms, or playing on international stages, John Lee continues to evolve as an artist. His commitment to exploring new sonic territories, bridging cultural traditions, and fostering community through music has made him one of the most compelling and versatile guitarists of his generation.
